Description
One of the highlights of the Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming, USA) is Grand Prismatic Spring. It is the largest hot spring in the US and measures 370 feet across and 120 feet deep. It is surrounded by colorful bands created by algae called thermophiles that live and thrive in extreme temperatures. Different types of thermophiles live at different temperatures and depending on their biology are responsible for the different bands of yellow, green, orange and red-brown seen around the spring. In cooler weather the pool constantly steams, forming clouds of hot mist that blow around often make the pool itself hard to see. In this photo, what is seen is part of the outflow area characterized by the orange bacterial mats. The spring itself is under the cloud of steam on the left adding some mystery to the scene.
