Description
The Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos (Spanish for "Castle of the Christian Monarchs"), also known as the Alcázar of Córdoba, is a medieval alcázar located in the historic centre of Córdoba. Its construction was ordered by the King Alfonso XI of Castile in the year 1328. I had read that even if you were ‘museumed out’, it was worth a visit here just to see the gardens. They may be more colorful and spectacular in the spring but in the winter the low angle of the sun creates long picturesque shadows. The gardens contain many orange and lemon trees, providing an amazing scent to the air. But don’t eat the oranges. As one website said “They are dud oranges”! I cannot say from firsthand experience, but I hear they are very bitter and used for marmalade rather than for juice. The Alcázar has been declared a Cultural Interest Heritage since 1931 and forms part of the Historic Center of Córdoba that was declared part of World Heritage by UNESCO in 1994.
