Canyon Trail in Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument is a 1.5 mile one-way trek through a slot canyon up to a mesa top for a panoramic view of the entire area at an elevation of about 6700’. The park is famous for its cone-shaped rock formations which were formed from volcanic eruptions 6-7 million years ago. However as seen here weathering and erosion of the volcanic layers create a great variety of rock shapes and slot canyons. Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument is located approximately 40 miles (64 km) southwest of Santa Fe, New Mexico, near Cochiti Pueblo. It is managed by the Bureau of Land Management and was established as a U.S. National Monument in January 2001 by President Bill Clinton. Kasha-Katuwe means "white cliffs" in the Pueblo language Keresan, the name taken from some of the white layers of volcanic rock.
