Artist's Description

Visiting a glacier should be an awe-inspiring event, all those millennia of snow compacted into one giant mass of ice grinding over the landscape and carving out the magnificent valleys. However, the Athabasca Glacier, along the Icefields Parkway in Jasper National Park, Alberta Canada is a tragic vanishing act and a sad reminder of the impact we humans are having upon the planet. More sad than happy story: I first visited the Athabasca Glacier in about 1980 and when I first glimpsed the glacier in 2016, I immediately saw how far it had receded. Amazingly a long ago memory surfaced and I could remember immediately where the glacier had been. I didn't need the signposts along the way that indicated where the glacier had been over the past several decades. The 1980 picture in my head was vivid and I was not surprised to find the signpost indicating the glacier's position in 1982 almost exactly where my memory suggested it would be. I'm not sure the signposts really register with visitors...

About Joan Carroll

Joan Carroll

Protected with PIXSY About Joan Carroll: I am a Fort Worth Texas-based outdoor photographer who feels at home while on the road...in Texas, in the US, around the world. Although travel and photography were dual interests from a young age, the coming of the digital camera provided undreamed of opportunities and unleashed previously untapped creativity. My photographic goal is to travel the world in a curious yet respectful way, taking the time to see and understand the unique story of each place I visit. Wherever I go I want to walk every street, hike every trail, ride the bus or metro, climb every tower, walk around and through every monument, and then do it all over again when the light changes. In every place, light, mood, color, and...
