Description
Ferries have played a vital role in Auckland's transportation scheme for more than a century. The Auckland Ferry Building in Auckland, New Zealand, is the hub of the city's ferry system and sees 13,000 passengers pass through its ferry terminal every day. The much-admired landmark Ferry Building has a striking daytime presence because of its Edwardian Baroque architectural style and location on Waitemata Harbor, Auckland's main anchorage and port area. We were lucky to be staying only 3 blocks away, making the daily trips to outlying islands very convenient. The Auckland ferry network connects Auckland City with suburbs in North Shore, west Auckland, and south Auckland, and islands in the Waitemata Harbour and Hauraki Gulf including Rangitoto and Tiritiri Matangi which we were able to visit. Since 1982 the ferry building has had a Category I classification with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, and was extensively restored between 1986 and 1988.
