Description
Early mornings before breakfast I would take a walk in the neighborhoods surrounding my B&B in Istanbul. The Blue Mosque loomed over the neighborhood, yielding the contrasts of the old and the new, the mundane and the splendid. The Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque or Sultanahmet Camii) is an historic mosque in Istanbul. It gets its name Blue Mosque not from the color of the domes but from the blue tiles on the interior walls. The Blue Mosque was built from 1609-1616 during the rule of Ahmed I. The design is the culmination of two centuries of both Ottoman mosque and Byzantine church development. It incorporates some Byzantine elements of the neighboring Hagia Sophia with traditional Islamic architecture and is considered to be the last great mosque of the classical period. While still used as a mosque, it is also one of the most popular tourist attractions in Istanbul. I wonder how it is viewed by those in the neighborhood.
