Description
It is easy to see that the Badlands National Park (South Dakota, USA) rock formations were deposited in layers of sediment such as sand, silt, and clay that were deposited at different times over millions of years. Different environments—sea, tropical land, and open woodland with meandering rivers—caused different sediments to accumulate here at different times. The Yellow Mounds formed during a period when the Rocky Mountains and Black Hills were uplifted and inland seas and rivers drained away, exposing the ocean mud to air which weathered into a yellow soil.
