Sometimes the landscape in the Badlands National Park (South Dakota, USA) is smoothly eroded, and other times is more harsh and forbidding! This dramatic scene is in an area called Norbeck, an area of rugged eroded buttes, pinnacles and spires dropping down steeply to a stream-eroded canyon. The pass through the area (Norbeck Pass) is named after an early proponent of establishing a national park in the area, Peter Norbeck. Norbeck was a well-digger who was elected governor of South Dakota in 1916 and 1918 and U.S. Senator in 1920, 1926, and 1932. He introduced a bill in the U.S. Senate to make the Badlands a national park in 1922 but was unsuccessful. However, Badlands was eventually authorized as a National Monument in 1939 and finally redesignated as a national park in 1978. Norbeck also participated in efforts to enlarge Yellowstone National Park, and establish Custer State Park, Grand Teton National Park, and Mount Rushmore National Monument. We should be forever grateful for the foresight of those who have fought to preserve such treasures around the country, and to those who continue to fight to preserve other beautiful lands for future generations to enjoy!
