On the outskirts of Kyoto Japan is the famous Bamboo Forest with towering stalks filtering the sunlight onto the paths below. The creaking of the stalks and rustling of the leaves prompted the Ministry of Environment to include the Sagano Bamboo Forest on its list of "100 Soundscapes of Japan" to encourage people to enjoy nature's music. Japan’s ancient elite enjoyed the area for summer retreats because of the cooling effect of the forest during the summer heat and humidity.
