Description
We had an overnight trip on the Banks Peninsula (southeast of Christchurch on the South Island of New Zealand) that included a 2½ hr self-guided bush walk along the famous Banks Peninsula Track through the beech forest of the Tutakakahikura Scenic Reserve. The guide dropped us off along the ridge line so it was all downhill. He gave us some sketchy directions along with the famous phrase “don’t worry, you can’t get lost”. Whenever someone tells me that I know I’m in trouble! It didn’t help that we started the hike in the late afternoon, I was already hungry, we didn’t have a map, and the deep gloom of the forest made it seem later than it was. Even though the hike is along the Banks Peninsula Track it was surprising how untrampled the trail was, and more than once we wondered if we were going in the right direction. But then we’d spy the little orange trail marker and feel reassured. Despite any misgivings as to where we were, how long it was until dinner, and when nightfall was, we made every little side detour, including one to see this unnamed waterfall. It was quite a nice little surprise in the gathering darkness. It was also quite an honor and a thrill to be allowed hiking access to part of the Banks Peninsula Track since normally you have to make reservations for any of the great walks in New Zealand. This section ran across private property to which we had access as part of our overnight trip.
