Description
When I entered the Pisa Baptistery of St. John in Pisa Italy, I thought I was in a great concert hall. I think a choir group, perhaps on a spring break trip, had gotten permission to sing. It is the most amazing and magical sound you ever want to hear and I learned first-hand what the ‘famed acoustics’ of the Baptistery were all about. While I took in the view from the upper floor, I was able to also enjoy one of the twice-hourly demonstrations by a guardian who intoned a few notes, allowing the sound to resonate all around. You can google Pisa Baptistery acoustics to watch any number of short video demonstrations. On the day of my visit, I was surprised at how few people were visiting the Baptistery so I had only to wait a short time on the upper floor before the hall was momentarily empty to take a photo. The Baptistery is the second building in the Piazza dei Miracoli, the Duomo di Pisa being the first and the famed leaning tower the third. It is largest baptistery in Italy: 54.86 m high with a diameter of 34.13 m. The interior is lacks decoration. The octagonal font at the centre dates from 1246 and is large enough to contain a person, as immersion was common for baptism in the Middle Ages. Since 1987, the Piazza del Duomo with the Cathedral, Cemetery, Baptistery, and Leaning Tower, has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
