Description
Barcelona Cathedral almost gets overlooked with all the attention given to Barcelona's 'other' cathedral, Sagrada Familia. In fact, the Wikipedia page actually starts by saying: "Not to be confused with Sagrada Familia, which is a large church by Antoni Gaudi, also in Barcelona". Barcelona Cathedral sits in the midst of the Barri Gotic (Gothic Quarter) and as such, has been the center of Barcelona life for centuries. I was lucky enough to have a bed and breakfast about 2 blocks from here so I was able to observe the eb and flow of life around the cathedral at all hours of the day. It is truly a gathering place! From break dancers to a flea market to a car show, it was all here in the space of three days. All intermingled with homeless beggers whom you can see lined up on the steps of the church. The elevated site occupied by the cathedral has always been the spiritual center of Barcelona. First there was a Roman temple here, then a mosque, and then a church. Construction on the present cathedral began in 1298 under King Jaume II and was completed in 1448. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Barcelona, Spain, and is also known as Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia (Saint Eulalia being one of the patron saints of Barcelona).
