Description
We hadn't really checked the calendar of festivals for Barcelona during a winter visit there and were quite surprised to round a corner one morning only to be confronted with a parade of giants (gigants)! These giants tower over the crowds, standing perhaps 20 feet tall. Their main feature is typically their papier mache head; bodies are covered in clothing that conceals a frame within which is a person 'controls' the gegant. Mostly this control involves just walking along the parade route, spinning around, and rudimentary dancing. The figures usually depict archetypes of the town or historical figures of local relevance. I'm not sure who this one is supposed to represent, she looks a bit like Wendy! The particular festival that we witnessed was the St Eulalia Festival, a winter festival of Barcelona honoring one of the patron saints of Barcelona. Eulalia (CE 290 - 303) was a 13-year-old Christian virgin who suffered martyrdom in Barcelona during the persecution of Christians in the reign of Roman emperor Diocletian.
