Description
You can walk atop the walls of Avila for about half of the perimeter of the historic town center, or about 1300 m. This is one of the first things you see when you start your walk, the Basilica de San Vicente which sits just outside the city walls. It is THE best view of the Basilica! There are more fabulous views all along the walk. I couldn't believe there weren't more people taking advantage of the wonderful views but I was happy to have it all to myself. The Basilica stands on the traditional site of the martyrdom of St. Vincent at the hands of the Romans. It is considered to be one of the best examples of Romanesque architecture in the Spain. But since it was constructed over the course of two centuries, it has elements of Gothic architecture as well. It was designated a National Monument in 1923.
