Description
The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore was just a block from our B&B in Rome Italy so it was easy to pop out early in the morning for a few photos before breakfast!. To me, the architecture doesn't look like a 'typical' church or cathedral, looking more like a palace. Wikipedia has this entry: 'Santa Maria Maggiore so closely resembles a second-century imperial basilica that it has sometimes been thought to have been adapted from a basilica for use as a Christian church.' I believe that the use of the word basilica in this context refers more to a town hall. The 14th century campanile, or bell tower, is the highest in Rome, at 240 feet, (about 75 m). Pursuant to the Lateran Treaty of 1929 between the Holy See and Italy, the Vatican fully owns the Basilica, and Italy is legally obligated to recognize its full ownership and to concede to it "the immunity granted by International Law to the headquarters of the diplomatic agents of foreign States". As a papal basilica, Santa Maria Maggiore is often used by the pope. Most notably, the pope presides over the annual Feast of the Assumption of Mary, celebrated on 15 August each year at the basilica. Santa Maria Maggiore is one of Rome's sites listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
