Description
The sign at the Alcazar in Seville Spain was intriguing...Maria de Padilla Bathrooms. I wondered...was it possible the bathrooms were so exotic that they got an exotic name to go with them. And right about that time I could have used an exotic bathroom. No such luck. Apparently, the "Baths of Lady Maria de Padilla" are rainwater tanks beneath the Patio del Crucero. The tanks are named after Maria de Padilla, the mistress of Peter the Cruel. But the translation from Spanish to English says: "This vast undergtound area is the lower part of the Patio of Cruise, it was an ideal place for the summer period, a garden dug in the earth with the ideal temperature and humidity to beat the heat. Changed at the time of Alfonso X the Wise, the vaults will be converted into gothic. At the same time, it's magnificent palace was being built. Under the reign of King Philip III, they are remodeled again and a mannerist source is built, remains of which can be seen in one end of the swimming pool and an access is opened to communicate them with the Dance Gardens." It wasn't very enlightening.
