We knew you could only access Cathedral Caves and the adjacent Waipati Beach in the Catlins area of the South Island of New Zealand within a couple hours either side of low tide. The beach is quite flat so that the water recedes quite far at low tide. But at high tide the water is all the way to the cliffs where the caves are making it an unsafe journey. Luckily for us, low tide on this gloriously sunny day in the Catlins was around 9 am making the caves and the beach a convenient first stop of the day.
