One of the more enticing sights of the California Missions is the campanario, or the structure that holds the bells. You can't help but lift your gaze to them. The campanario is 46 feet high and the entire structure holds 5 bells, only the top three are shown here. When the King of Spain wanted bells forged for the missions, he requored that they have a crown. The two lower bells in this image are both crown bells. All five bells are rung in unison only once a year on the birthday of the mission (July 16). The bells played an important role in the everyday life of the Mission A sequence of tones and rhythms was developed for each occasion. they were used to announce times for Mass, work, meals, and siestas. The bells signaled danger, rang solemnly to honor the dead and pealed joyously to celebrate feast days, weddings and fiestas.
