Description
I started off trying to remake "Bells of Mission San Diego" into a black and white, but ended up liking this better! The campanario is 46 feet high and the entire structure holds 5 bells, only the top three are shown here. When the King of Spain wanted bells forged for the missions, he requored that they have a crown. The two lower bells in this image are both crown bells. All five bells are rung in unison only once a year on the birthday of the mission (July 16). The bells played an important role in the everyday life of the Mission A sequence of tones and rhythms was developed for each occasion. they were used to announce times for Mass, work, meals, and siestas. The bells signaled danger, rang solemnly to honor the dead and pealed joyously to celebrate feast days, weddings and fiestas. A stand-alone bell was located approximately one mile from the mission, and another was placed two miles from the mission. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries when a Franciscan rang the two-mile bell, it could be heard at the mission. This signified company! So they got the food going and the bed ready for the weary travelers.
