Description
Florence Italy is obsessed not only with Michelangelo, but most recently with its fame as a major setting in the movie Inferno, from Dan Brown’s novel. You can pick among many tours highlighting the locations mentioned in the movie. Although I didn’t go on any of the tours, I had read the book, seen the movie, read the book again, and seen the movie two times on different flights. I think the fascination comes from the way the author not only mentions different places in his books but weaves them inextricably into the plot line so that you feel like you have really been there. Here is part of the Visari Corridor, the elevated enclosed passageway connecting the Palazzo Vecchio with the Palazzo Pitti. The Visari Corridor is actually the part behind the small round wire enclosed openings above the archways. I have to admit I wondered who was up there looking down as I took photos on this early morning! At the far end you see where the Visari Corridor makes a left turn leading into the Uffizi Gallery. In the other direction (i.e., behind me in the photo), it crosses over the Arno River atop the Ponte Vecchio. The Corridor was commissioned in 1565 by Cosimo de' Medici and named after its designer, Giorgio Visari. The corridor enabled the Medicis to move freely and safely between their residence in Palazzo Pitti and the Palazzo Vecchio, the government's headquarters without having to mingle with the hoi polloi.

What a terrific perspective, Joan, and the reflection on the bricks adds a shimmer and shine that invites the viewer to take a walk down the path, past the arches.
