Description
The Santiago Cathedral, the oldest church in Bilbao Spain, dates from the 14-15th centuries but was only declared a cathedral in 1950. The interior is primarily of Gothic design. The church is named in honor of the apostle Saint James the Great (Santiago in Spanish), by virtue of being a point of transit for the pilgrims that followed the Northern branch of the Way of Saint James (Pilgrimage of Compostela). The Bilbao Cathedral was declared a Historical and Artistic Heritage of Spain in 1931 and is considered one of the best gothic manifestations of the Basque Country. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage site within the Caminos de Santiago de Compostela.
