Blinde Ezelstraat or Blind Donkey Alley, how much more colorful a name can you imagine?!.This narrow alley in Bruges Belgium looks eerie and deserted just before dawn but by day it is heaving with people! It is a popular walkway leading from the Burg (one of the main historic squares) to the Vismarkt (Fish Market). One story about how it got it name is from medieval times when donkeys carried fish from the North Sea on their backs. They were stopped here so that their owners could put blinders on them. Otherwise, the donkeys wouldn't cross the water between the old city and the fish market. True? Maybe. A good story? Absolutely! Some other interesting tidbits about this street are is that midway down the street you can see an original iron hinge from the city's south gate, back from when the city was ringed by a moat and closed nightly. Also after a 1960s cleaning of centuries of grime, it must have been decided to leave a reminder of the grime. There is a black patch that was left uncleaned on the wall to show what it looked like before a cleaning. So they tell me....
