Description
Coming from the drought state of Texas, I rarely get to see such lush blue and green! It was intoxicating! Around every bend it was more beautiful than before. I never did see a sign but based on my map I'm pretty sure this is Lake Crescent in Olympic National Park in Washington state. According to Wikipedia, Lake Crescent is known for its brilliant blue waters and exceptional clarity, caused by a lack of nitrogen in the water which inhibits the growth of algae. The road past the lake hugged the shoreline, only one lane in each direction, no shoulder to speak of. Every once in awhile there was a turnout where you could stop for a picture but it would come on you a bit suddenly as you came around a bend so you had to decide quickly to turn off the road or not. I was actually driving on the 'wrong' side of the road because the lake was on the other side of the road so I really had to make a quick decision as to whether it was safe to dart over to the turnout on the other side! Lake Crescent is a deep lake located entirely within Olympic National Park in Clallam County, Washington, United States, approximately 17 miles (27 km) west of Port Angeles on Route 101. It's official depth is 624 feet but unofficial depth measurements of 1000 feet have been recorded.
