Description
It’s called Blue Pools because….you guessed it….it is BLUE, spectacularly blue! Blue Pools is located where the Blue River joins the Makaroa River between Wanaka and Haast, New Zealand. Its blue color is the result of light refraction on the clear, snow-fed, icy cold water. Getter there is an easy short walk through mature beech and podocarp forest making it a popular stop on the drive from Wanaka to Haast. Walk through beech forest to a swing bridge over Makarora River. Continue on a boardwalk to the second swing bridge (seen here), which is the viewing platform over the Blue Pools. Cross this bridge for great views up the river gorge. (What is called a swing bridge in NZ is more likely called a suspension bridge in the US.) Blue Pools is located within Mt Aspiring National Park, part of the Te Wahipounamu - Southwest New Zealand World Heritage Area.
