Description
Our amazing guides on the Sierpe River in Costa Rica spotted this boat-billed heron perched high up in the tree. The boat-billed heron (Cochlearius cochlearius) is a solitary species found in mangrove swamps and near freshwater, especially rivers and wetlands. The boat-billed heron grows to about 54 cm long. Adult boat-billed herons are pale grey to white in color, with chestnut colored abdomens and black flanks. The massive broad scoop-like bill, which gives rise to this species' name, is mainly black. They are nocturnal, though the species is known to spend days not only sleeping but also preening and quietly roosting. During mating season however, these herons may hunt and feed during the day, as well.
