Description
On a drive from Jacksonville FL to Gainesville FL, you might use US 301. It must have been a main route 'back in the day' since it is populated by many old motor inns and old time tourist stands. Every time we drive this route, the old signs bring back memories to me from the 1950s and 1960s. One day I finally stopped to photograph one of them for Boiled Peanuts, a southern favorite! Since US 301 is a popular short cut between Northeastern Florida and the Gulf Coast region, a number of towns along the road have been notorious speed traps. The speed limit drops from 65 mph to 30 mph in a matter of a few hundred feet. Many have accused the police in Waldo, Starke, Lawtey, and others of giving tickets simply to raise money. The American Automobile Association has strongly advised motorists to avoid this stretch of the road.Wonderful old signs along the roads of north Florida. You HAVE to take those speed limit signs seriously! Every time we drive that route, we see people pulled over....EVERY time! Driver beware!
