I had an afternoon to wander around Moab Utah (USA) so I went into a hiking store to have a look around. I was talking with a salesperson who told me I should take the hike out to Corona Arch: it was only 1.5 miles and it was close to town. I figured I had just enough time to do the hike before I had to meet up with a group later in the day. So I hustled back to the hotel, gathered my gear and took off. I hadn’t read up on the hike so I had no idea what to expect. Reading later I found a site that said “Few hikes culminate with such wow as the Corona Arch Trail”. But when you come to the end of the trail, there are actually two arches! Bowtie Arch (left) and Corona Arch (distant right). Bowtie is a pothole-type arch located high on the cliff above the trail. This type of arch forms when a depression on top of a rock mass is eroded by the forces of water and merges with an alcove on a rock face below. Corona Arch is a freestanding arch and one of the largest in the Moab area. It is composed of Navajo sandstone and measures 140 feet across by 105 feet high. I could have easily spent a lot more time there!
