Description
On a drive from Queenstown to Te Anau on the south island of New Zealand, we were enjoying and marveling at the burst of spring color from yellow bushes all over the landscape. We stopped at one place along the way for some photos, this being Drift Bay in Lake Wakatipu. Lake Wakatipu is an inland lake (finger lake) in the southwest corner of the Otago Region that was carved by glacial action 15,000 years ago. It is New Zealand's longest lake, and its third largest. Despite the perfusion of flowering beauty we found out the next day that this yellow bush, called broom, is an agricultural pest in New Zealand! Like many other species of plants and flowers that were introduced by Europeans into New Zealand, broom crowds out and kills the native species. Broom can grow in dense stands, completely suppressing native species and destroying wildlife habitats. Broom plants and surrounding areas are avoided by grazing animal stock, reducing the stock carrying capacity of the grazing land. After flowering, and when the broom's seed pods are mature, the seed pods burst explosively, making control and eradication difficult. Once again, don't mess with Mother Nature.
