Description
If I'd taken the time to think about it, it might not have been so surprising to see a windmill in Belgium! We all associate windmills and the Netherlands of course, but maybe not Belgium. A short walk east from the historic center of Bruges brings you to the historic city moat and three remaining windmills. This one is the Bonne-Chieremolen windmill. Medieval Bruges was heavily fortified, encircled by a city wall which was itself protected by a moat. Where the windmills sit today was the site of part of the old city wall. The Bonne-Chieremolen windmill was brought to Bruges from Flanders in 1911. Another windmill along this green stretch can be visited to see the inner workings. Today it is a lovely place for a stroll and a picnic! It is surprisingly peaceful and seems far removed from the historic center where most tourists stay.
