Description
Budapest's waterfront from is simply mesmerizing! Here is seen the Vigado Concert Hall on the left to Gellert Hill and the Liberty Statue on the right. Separated by the Danube River, Buda (the right side in the photo) and Pest (the left side) are united by several bridges. The Elizabeth Bridge is the newest bridge in Budapest and is situated at the narrowest part of the Danube in the Budapest area, spanning only 290 m. The oldest church in Pest, Inner City Parish Church built in the 13th century is on its Pest end (with the 2 spires). The original bridge at this location was blown up during WWII and could not be rebuilt. The current bridge was built between 1961 and 1964. Behind it is the green Liberty Bridge. Atop Gellert Hill sits the Liberty Statue, erected in 1947 in remembrance of what was then referred to as the Soviet liberation of Hungary during World War II, which ended the occupation by Nazi Germany. Today it commemorates all who have sacrificed their lives for the independence, freedom, and prosperity of Hungary.
