Investigate the entire 8.7-acre island that includes the 89-foot-tall light tower, the original home of the lighthouse keeper and his family, and the oil house where fuel for the light was stored.
A winter visit to Cana Island Lighthouse, especially one on a snowy day, finds the grounds deserted, with the blanket of snow muffling all the sound. Some footprints were barely visible under the falling snow, attesting to the fact that I was the only recent visitor. The Cana Island Lighthouse is located on Cana Island, a unique little island that is bounded by the waters of Lake Michigan on three sides. To reach the island, you walk across the dry lake bottom. The light station grounds there include a number of original buildings: the light tower (which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places), the octagon-shaped oil house, the lighthouse keepers' home, a period brick privy, and a wooden barn. The highlight of any Cana Island summer visit is climbing the 97 steps of the tower�s spiral staircase to reach the gallery deck. However, this climb was closed in the winter leaving only this tantalizing view of the beautiful third order Fresnel lens. The lens was made in France. It used to be fueled by lard, later it was fueled by kerosene, then by acetylene, and now by electricity. The round ball at the top is the vent that removed the smoke and soot from the oil lamp. On October 15, 1880 a terrible storm called the Alpena Gale destroyed seven ships near this lighthouse, and on October 12, 1928, the freighter M.J. Bartelme went aground in the fog at this location after attempts to free the ship failed.
