Description
It was a spectacular blue and white day on the barren windswept headland when I visited Cape Blanco Lighthouse neat Port Orford OR. You can even see the sliver of the waning moon just above the low roof structure. How perfect is that! But the first thing you notice about Cape Blanco Lighthouse when you open the door of your vehicle in the parking lot is the WIND! So much so that I needed to lie down on the grass to minimize its effect and be able to hold the camera steady! And the volunteers at the lighthouse told me that it was a calm day. If that was so, you can well imagine why a lighthouse was needed here. Looking out to sea, you see many rocks and shoals and reefs, and it would have been quite a terror to mariners. Cape Blanco juts out 1.5 miles into the Pacific Ocean from the Oregon coast, terminating in a barren large headland with 200-foot cliffs. it is the most westerly point in Oregon, creating its exposed position, and subjecting it to the high winds. Since the lighthouse was far from any harbor, its primary function was to warn ships away from the reefs, which extended from the cape, and to provide a position fix for navigators. The fixed white light from the tower's first-order, Henry-Lepaute Fresnel lens was first exhibited on December 20, 1870 and served this function well. With a focal plane of 250 feet, the light could be see from up to twenty-three miles at sea. The lighthouse holds the record for longest service at one lighthouse: James Langlois worked here for 42 years and James Hughes served at least thirty-three years. Hopefully they got along well, as they spent most of those years at the lighthouse together. Keep in mind that the Fresnel lens had to be cleaned inside and out, as did the windows to the lamp room....EVERY DAY! That's over 15,000 times.
