Description
It was a spectacular blue and white day on the barren windswept headland when I visited Cape Blanco State Park and Cape Blanco Lighthouse neat Port Orford OR. But the first thing you notice about Cape Blanco State Park when you open the door of your vehicle in the parking lot is the WIND! So much so that I needed to lie down on the grass to minimize its effect and be able to hold the camera steady! And the volunteers at the lighthouse told me that it was a calm day. If that was so, you can well imagine why a lighthouse was needed here. Looking out to sea, you see many rocks and shoals and reefs, and it would have been quite a terror to mariners. That is Gull Rock in the mid distance on the left. Cape Blanco juts out 1.5 miles into the Pacific Ocean from the Oregon coast, terminating in a barren large headland with 200-foot cliffs. it is the most westerly point in Oregon, creating its exposed position, and subjecting it to the high winds. It also extends further west than any point of land in the contiguous United States (lower 48 states) except Cape Alava in Washington.
