Description
I'm not sure what made me drive back to the Cape May lighthouse from Sunset Beach. The sunset at the beach was getting a bit drab with clouds all along the horizon. Maybe I just wanted to see the lighthouse with the beacon lit. When I arrived I saw these gorgeous clouds and colors! I had absolutely no time to set up a tripod, the colors and the light were changing by the second. I used the window sill of the car to steady the camera. Within 5 minutes from here, the color was gone. The park closes at dusk and the gate was already closed for entry and half closed for exit! As I drove away, I was looking around to see what I would have to have driven over to exit if the gate had been closed! The Cape May Lighthouse is a lighthouse located in New Jersey at the tip of Cape May, in Lower Township's Cape May Point State Park. It was built in 1859, was automated in 1946, and continues operation to this day. It is the third fully documented lighthouse to be built at Cape May Point. The first was built in 1823; the second in 1847. The exact locations of the first two lighthouses are now underwater due to erosion. The third lighthouse was build 1000 feet inland from the second where it stands today. Cape May Lighthouse was electrified in 1938, and then doused in 1941 as were many of the other coastal lights at the start of WWII. The 1st order Fesnel lens was removed in 1946. The current light can be seen from 24 miles away, the visibility limited only by the curvature of the earth. The light is under management of the Coast Guard, while the tower itself is leased to the Mis-Atlantic Center for the Arts.

Excellent blue light image. I love the streak of light that appears to go right through the lighthouse.
