Description
On a hot summer afternoon, it was a treat to find Carson County Courthouse in a lovely setting with so many trees. Carson County in Panhandle, TX, has had 3 courthouses. This is the third, build in 1950, and caption underneath one onnline picture of the courthouse says "The 1950 Carson County Courthouse with all the utilitarian charm of that era." However, it was in keeping with the other courthouses in the region, having been constructed in the moderne style. It is a three-story building on a raised basement, constructed of brick, concrete and steel. Basement level is of dark stone and other levels of blond brick. Center entrance is vertical pavilion of light stone with frieze carved in relief depicting common landmarks of the area (oil wells, cattle, canyons, farming, etc.) which are pillars of the local economy. The historical marker on the property is for the county rather than the courthouse, and reads: "Carson County. Created 1876. Organized 1888. Named for Samuel Price Carson, Secretary of State, Republic of Texas. A pioneer county in oil and gas development. Panhandle, county seat, promised main lines of 3 railroads, was by-passed for Amarillo, yet became one of the 4 historic town in Texas Panhandle." Written by someone of few words....
