Description
A more dreamy version of the photo entitled Cathedral Basilica of St Augustine. As I stood on the sidewalk admiring the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine in St Augustine FL, one thing that struck me was how few people were doing the same! Maybe it was the blazing hot summer afternoon or the ease of just riding by in the tourist tram. For whatever reason, I was one of the few pausing to look for more than a few minutes. I was there long enough for people to start asking me for directions! The Cathedral is one of the most prominant landmarks of St Augustine, located right on the central square. It is the seat of the Catholic Bishop of St. Augustine. Constructed over five years (17931797), it was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark on April 15, 1970.The history of Florida, like other places in North America, involved being ruled by several European nations including Britain and Spain. The cornerstone for what is now the Cathedral Basilica of St Augustine was laid in 1793, several years after Britain had ceded this land back to Spain. At the time it was the church of the Immaculate Conception. It was elevated to a Cathedral after the Diocese of St Augustine was created in 1870. It was elevated to the status of a minor basilica on December 4, 1976 by Pope Paul VI; it was the 27th American church to be honored as such. Currently (summer 2014) the interior is under renovation but if you peek inside you can still get a glimpse.
