Description
The origin of the Procathedral of Santa Maria de Caceres in Caceres Spain dates to the 13th century when its style was Romanesque. But like so many historical structures, it suffered destruction at some point during its history and was rebuilt in the 15th-16th centuries in a Gothic style. One of the jewels of the interior and of the Spanish Renaissance period is the main altarpiece carved of cedar and oak wood. A characteristic that makes it unique is that it lacks polychromy. If this were the first cathedral you ever visited, that uniqueness might not stand out. But if you have visited other cathedrals where the altars glitter and gleam with gold and gilding, you immediately notice the somber difference. The translation from one website put is thus: “it is advisable to approach it to observe the different parts that integrate it carefully, guessing all the scenes depicted and identifying all the symbolism that oozes in its pronounced ascending sense”. While Google translate was a bit imperfect I think the meaning is clear!
