Description
The interior of the Cathedral in Valencia Spain was curiously deserted. It turned out that most people seemed to know what I didn’t: that the famous chapel with the alleged Holy Grail was not open on this day! I talked my way into getting free ticket for the following day to see that chapel but meanwhile enjoyed the quiet church! The doors of the high altarpiece from 1510 are also famous. Only the exteriors are seen here. The paintings represented on the left are (from the top): The Adoration of the Shepherd, The Adoration of the Magi and the Resurrection of Christ. Three magnificent paintings are on the right door (from the top): The Ascension of the Lord, The Arrival of the Holy Spirit and the death and the Assumption of the Virgin. The Valencia Cathedral is formally called the Metropolitan Cathedral–Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady of Valencia or Saint Mary's Cathedral. Most of Valencia Cathedral was built between the 13th century and the 15th century, and thus its style is mainly Gothic. However, its construction went on for centuries. As a consequence there is a mixture of artistic styles, ranging from the early Romanesque, Valencian, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical.
