It would not be too far from the truth to say that I was out early on a winter morning in Orvieto Italy hoping to find someplace open for coffee! There were few others about, some workers catching the bus nearby in the piazza, the street cleaners and trash collectors, a few joggers. I got waylaid early by the side door of the cathedral or Duomo. The portal is small but the black and white striped façade looms large in the night! Like the interior, these stripes are alternating layers of basalt and travertine. While the choice of stripes may seem odd, they are quite common with the medieval churches of northern and central Italy, including also the spectacular cathedral of Siena. In my visit to Orvieto, this was my first view of the cathedral, having approached from a side street. The exterior side walls give no hint as to the splendor that awaits when you view the front façade! Like many Italian towns, Duomo and its piazza are focal points of the town.
