Description
I am always cautious when I am photographing alone in the late night or early morning. When I first walked onto the Plaza de la Catedral (or Cathedral Square) before sunrise one morning in Havana Cuba, there was a shadowy figure leaning up against the pillar across the plaza under the portico of the Palacio del Conde Lombillo. I kept my eye on him as I worked but eventually discovered that it was only a statue! The statue is of the flamenco dancer Antonio Gades, who was original from Spain but spent a good deal of his latter life in Cuba. Just weeks before his death he was decorated with the Order of Jose Marti by Fidel Castro in Havana, Cuba. In the background is the The Cathedral of the Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception which serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Cristobal de la Habana.
