Description
The Roman Catholic Cathedral of Tarragona in Tarragona Spain is perched on one of the highest points the city and is the city's most emblematic building. It was consecrated in 1331, making it a unique representation of the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture. Located in a site previously occupied by a Roman temple dating to the time of Tiberius, a Visigothic cathedral and a Moorish mosque, it was declared a national monument in 1905. The main facade has three portals, corresponding to the nave and the aisles; the central one is in a Gothic style while the other two are in Romanesque style. The main portal is surmounted by a large rose window having a diameter of 11 m. The twelve spokes represent the twelve tribes of Israel, or the apostles. The two lateral portals have also smaller rose windows. The main portal, executed from 1277 to c. 1291, features arches of decreasing size. On the mullion dividing the massive doors is an image of the Virgin with the Christ child, and statues of the prophets and apostles can be seen at the same height on either side of the door.
