Description
Orvieto Italy sits atop a cliff of tufo rock but you can walk all the way around the city at the base of the cliff. Along the way you discover the Church of Crocefisso del Tufo, a tiny chapel dug into the cliffside. While there are descriptions of what is inside, unfortunately it was closed and locked on the day that I walked by. The nearby sign explaining the chapel and nearly Etruscan necropolis has some graffiti on it noting that ‘Chiusa – Closed” (Church closed). However, the little jar of berry-laden branches on the window to the chapel was charming. The legend regarding the early days of the chapel has it that the tiny chapel of Crocefisso del Tufo dates to the period of the Goths (6th century). An inscription inside the chapel tells of a soldier who was unjustly accused by his comrades of theft and homicide and threw himself over the cliff. As he was falling he invoked the Crucifix he was wearing, and was miraculously unharmed. As thanks he then carved the image of Christ in the rock with his hands. An Orvietan scholar more realistically attributes the Crucifix to the 16th century but noting that in 1615 it was “already the subject of ancient devotion”. Other inscriptions in the chapel refer to an 18th century restoration of the chapel and perhaps one in thanks for the defeat of Napoleon.
