Description
After the crush or tourists and hikers at the train station and at the waterfront, it was surprising to walk up to the 'top' of Manarola in the Cinque Terre region of Italy, to find only a few locals milling about the square outside the Parish Church of St Lawrence (San Lorenzo). St Lawrence is the patron of the village. The church was built in Gothic style in 1338, as indicated on the well-worn cornerstone in the facade. The interior is simple, with three barrel vault aisles and plain furnishings. On the main altar is a XIV century triptych with the Madonna with Child, Saint Lawrence and Saint Catherine.
