Description
I had hiked from Monterrosso to Levanto and mostly just wanted to sit down! But I managed a short walk around Levanto to see the main sights. This is the exterior facade of the Parish Church of Sant’Andrea (Saint Andrew) in Levanto Italy, which was begun in 1222 and consecrated in 1463. The facade of the church is quite distinctive and also characteristic of some of the other churches in the Cinque Terre region of Italy. The exterior striped, alternating between white Carrara marble and the local greenish/black serpentinite. It is always humbling to visit these old structures to witness the craftsmanship and care taken in the construction in light of what modern day people might view as limited tools and technology. The Church of Sant’Andrea is not just the main religious building of Levanto, but it has a certain importance in the entire territory of eastern Liguria because it is home parish of the Diocese of La Spezia, Sarzana and Ashlar. It dates to the thirteenth century and later enlarged in the fifteenth century.
