Description
It had been raining, drizzling or threatening to do so for most of my week in Spain. I figured I could be miserable in the rain as easily in Aranjuez as in Madrid so I elected to make a day trip to see the Royal Palace there. But as the train moved out of Madrid in the early morning, the sky to the east looked clear. I was so excited to see blue sky, I practically ran from the train station to the Royal Palace and other sites around the city in an effort to see and do as much as possible while there were blue skies! Close by the Palace is the Church of San Antonio, built as a royal chapel but ultimately served the people as well as the Monarchy. The church consists of a central circular structure with a grand north-facing portico entrance facade of five white limestone arches decorated with Tuscan pilasters. A gallery of a further five arches on either side of this join the central church portico with the complimentary style of the smaller arched walkways on each side. It was declared Bien de Interés Cultural and a World Heritage Site by UNESCO within Aranjuez Cultural Landscape in 2003.
