Description
I arrived in Civita di Bagnoregio, near Orvieto Italy, early one winter morning. A normally deserted town was even more deserted if such a thing is possible! Various websites have listed the population as somewhere between 6-10. The town is noted for its striking position atop a plateau of friable volcanic tuff overlooking the Tiber river valley. It is in constant danger of destruction as the edges of the plateau collapse due to erosion, leaving the buildings to crumble as their underlying support falls away. Founded by the Etruscans 2500 years ago, Civita started to decline in the 17th century, especially after the 1695 earthquake. Such was also the fate of the town’s main church, the Church of San Donato, which was founded in the fifth century and was the ancient cathedral of the of the diocese of Bagnoregio. The 1695 earthquake caused serious damage to the cathedral, so that the diocese’s headquarters were moved to the nearby town of Bagnoregio. Today the church still has the place of pride in the main piazza of the town. Civita di Banoregio was placed on the World Monuments Fund's 2006 Watch List of the 100 Most Endangered Sites, because of threats it faces from erosion and unregulated tourism.

I love the light in your photos. The warm tones in the building walls are so inviting.
