Description
San Michele in Foro seems to be a hub of daily life in Lucca Italy. It sits in Piazza San Michele, and the church is completed by the name where it was built: the forum, the first center of public life in ancient times. No matter where I was going in Lucca my path seemed to traverse this piazza! As described on one website, “it stands in an enormous space where the sky opens up at last after a journey along narrow, winding medieval streets, like finally a finally reached destination: this is how it was for the pilgrims who passed through the town as they followed the Fancigena pilgrim route”. (The Francigena was a pilgrim route from England and France to Rome and onward to southern Italy before embarkation to the Hold Land.) Maybe that is the appeal of the square, the wide open space, particularly on a sunny day. The south-facing steps on the side of the church were a particularly popular spot for people taking in the sun, resting, eating, or people watching. A church at this location dates from 795 CE although like most ancient churches it has gone through much reconstruction and remodeling over the centuries. The façade dates from the 13th century with remodeling during the 19th century. It is topped by a statue of St Michael the Archangel. On the lower right corner of the façade is a statue dating from 1480 of the Madonna to celebrate the end of the 1476 plague.
