Description
Most people go to Batthyany Square in Budapest Hungary for the fantastic views of the Hungarian Parliament. But the square itself is noted for the Szent Anna-templom (Church of Saint Anne), a Roman Catholic church built by the Jesuits between 1740 and 1762, and one of Budapest's most beautiful Baroque buildings. The beautiful facade is dominated by two symmetric towers and between them the symbol of Holy Trinity and two angels. The Jesuits started with the construction of the church in 1740. By the time the church was finally consecrated in 1805 the Jesuit order had already been abolished in Hungary. Over the succeeding 200 years the church endured wars, floods and earthquakes. It was even suggested that it be demolished to make way for the construction of the metro; but this plan was never realized, and the church was restored between 1970 and 1984.
