Description
The hike from Riomaggiore to Portovenere in the Cinque Terre region of Italy has beautiful views of the coastline and enticing views of Portovenere as you finish up the hike high above the town. Most intriguing is the Church of St Peter on a rocky outcrop over the Gulf of La Spezia or Gulf of the Poets. Standing on top of the rock and surrounded by the blue water from three sides it almost looks like a fortified castle. Inside it has a very medieval atmosphere. The church was officially consecrated in 1198, built over a pre-existing 5th century Palaeo-Christian Church. As in most buildings that old, there have been additions and renovations over the centuries although some of the ancient sections still remain. In 1997 Portovenere and the villages of Cinque Terre were designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
