In the Black Sand Basin in Yellowstone National Park you will find Cliff Geyser on the bank of Iron Creek. Its name originates due to its cliff-like wall of geyserite around the crater. The estimates of its eruption interval vary from 30 minutes to 18 hours, with weeks or years of dormancy. Luckily for me, it started erupting soon after I arrived. An indication of a pending eruption is that the crater nearly fills with boiling water. As the eruption begins, jets of water explode through the pool 15 to 40 feet high. This is accompanied by a tremendous amount of steam. The eruption reaches its highest point the first half hour and gradually subsides until the crater empties. If you enjoy watching these eruptions, Cliff Geyser is more mesmerizing than Old Faithful because of the longer duration of the eruption (30+ min vs 5 min). Cliff Geyser has an average temperate of 174.3°F (79.1°C), an average pH of 6.1.

Protected with PIXSY About Joan Carroll: I am a Fort Worth Texas-based outdoor photographer who feels at home while on the road...in Texas, in the US, around the world. Although travel and photography were dual interests from a young age, the coming of the digital camera provided undreamed of opportunities and unleashed previously untapped creativity. My photographic goal is to travel the world in a curious yet respectful way, taking the time to see and understand the unique story of each place I visit. Wherever I go I want to walk every street, hike every trail, ride the bus or metro, climb every tower, walk around and through every monument, and then do it all over again when the light changes. In every place, light, mood, color, and...
